History: Prostate is a walnut sized gland at the base of the
bladder that encircles the urethra, the tube through which urine is voided. The
prostate produces prostatic fluid, which makes up the bulk of the make
ejaculate and nourishes and transports the sperm. Cancel of the prostate gland
is the second leading cause of cancel death among men. There is known way to
prevent this disease, but early detection can make it possible to catch the
cancer before it spreads to other sites in the body.
There are two tests PSA and PCA3.
Prostate-specific- antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by
cells of the prostate gland, the test measure the level of PSA in blood.
What is the PCA3 test and is it worth having?
Okay, based on research a PCA3 test can help determine the
need for a repeat prostate biopsy in an initial one comes up negative. Approved by Food and Drug Administration in
February 2012, the test analyzes the cells in the first urine specimen passed
after a digital rectal examination. A higher score suggests an increased
likelihood of cancer, though the exact threshold hasn’t yet been established. Based
on study PCA3 will yield fewer false positives than the controversial PSA
(prostate-specific-antigen) test which would lead to fewer unnecessary
biopsies. PCA3 test might help with
indicate the aggressiveness of prostate cancer in men who have it, but it hasn’t
been approved for that use.
